I always get excited (probably too excited) when I see designs inspired by nature, especially insects. Earlier this year, I was floored by the beauty of Zac Posen's butterflies and "Beetle Mania" at London Fashion Week. But what happens when, instead of insect inspiration, the designs contain actual insect parts (like wings) or whole insects (like beetles, spiders, etc?) Before you answer, hold that thought. As you will see from these examples, sometimes beauty can come in the form of fluttery wings and creepy crawlies. (Then again, some of them are just gross. To those I say, "Where did I put my bug spray?")

I love 'em but then my folks had one of those 70's shower screens with the vac sealed fish in them. So being surrounded by dead animals doesn't bother me (not in a freaky serial killer way)!!
There's a delicate fragility to these pieces, I imagine wearing them would reenforce our immortality.
I must admit these are very beautiful accessories, but i would never wear them, as long as this means killing innocent animals (YES, bug are animals too!)
I hate bugs, in any way, shape or form.
Yeah, if it looks way too realistic, it can get very freaky, fast!
Good point, Corry. Not sure if the bugs are "recycled" after they die a natural death to make the jewelry, or if they are killed specifically for this purpose. It's definitely something I would ask the jewelry makers before buying.
Great post! I linked to it on my blog:

I hate bugs but i do love my little i'm-not-sure-what-kind-of-bug it is keychain that I picked up in Chinatown a few years back. It looks very similar to the ones you have posted here.
I detest bugs in every form imaginable. But as Picasso once uttered -- ""Give me a museum, and I'll fill it." The popular rendition - "Give me a bug and I'll kill it." For the sake of art ... I suppose.
I won't be standing in line to own any of them. It is one thing to be inspired by, another thing all together to actually wear a dead anything. I will never understand how dead reinforces any kind of life or immortality.
Yuck.
D.
This kinda freaks me out. I can't stop itching.
I love the insects as jewelry. Have you checked out the work of J.W. Anderson and his collection "Death of a Naturalist"? Some beautiful work.
Thank you for having my butterfly pendants in your feature! I see that a lot of people are concerned about where these come from- my butterfly wings are all from a local Conservatory. It is actually a garden made just to house butterflies. Once they live their full life and naturally expire, I use the wings to show off how gorgeous they can be. miss PoPkO
It's funny how quickly people judge without doing a little research about the items they are criticizing. Disliking something is one thing, but saying "yuck" and passing judgment isn't right.
