Electric Barbarella

I wasn't around in 1968 when the movie Barbarella tanked at the box office. But it's campy characters and flawed storyline have managed to foster a cult following hell bent on keeping it alive. (Yes, I am part of that group!) Based on a 1960's French comic strip, Barbarella told the story of a 41st-century female astronaut on a mission to find Durand Durand, a scientist who had disappeared with the galaxy's deadliest weapon. And, although cheesy to the core, the movie was the most fashion conscious space fantasy of its time.

The costumes, designed by Jaques Fonteray, were created to depict a fantasy world of sensual, tactile surfaces -- a combination of synthetics (PVC and plastic) and organics (like leather and fur). Jane Fonda's babe-a-delic character was best known for her backcombed blond hair, false eye lashes and minimalist outfits. Now, fast forward to 2008: I wonder what our galactic heroine would wear on one of her sex-capades today? A Marios Schwab PVC Corset Dress perhaps?
