"Living Water" by Katy WidgerI have always been a big fan of fiber art (a style of fine art which uses textiles such as fabric, yarn, and natural and synthetic fibers). Not only does the artist focus on the materials used, but on the manual labor involved as part of its significance. (There is even a magazine dedicated to the craft.)
One of my favorite fiber artists is Katy Widger, a mixed-media talent out of New Mexico. So imagine the look on my face when I first laid eyes on Tsumori Chisato's breathtaking fall 2008 collection. Not only did it have "fiber art" written all over it, each piece bore a striking (if not eerie) resemblance to New Mexico-inspired quilts made by Katy Widger over the past two decades.

off topic...I notice the 'matter' was resolved, I hope to your satisfaction.
These are all beautiful.
...probably more accurate to title this post "..Tsumori Chisato's Katy Widger Dreams.." or "Fiber-arts Dreams" or something. I am from New Mexico and am not previously familiar with Katy Widger. At any rate...I usually love your style comparisons ('Octo dela Renta' was a recent favorite!) but this one is way off. None of these clothes have any...New Mexico-ness about them other than that they remind you, personally, of a friend who happens to live here in Taos. Maybe in the future you will have time to do a TRUE New Mexico tribute...something that really salutes our endless blue skies, desert flora and fauna, native american, mexican and spanish heritage, and reputation for ART.

Tsumori Chisato's collection was truly wonderful. I loved how you matched the collection with those fiber art pieces. Great blog!
Imelda,
Yes! Today's Top Trends deleted all of the posts, as they were unable to link back to me in the galleries. They were nice enough to repond in a timely manner :)

Hi Hope,
Point taken. Katy Widger (who I have never actually met) draws the inspiration for her fiber art from New Mexico -- the landscape, the skies, the people.
Last year, Katy's work was featured in a solo exhibit by the Albuquerque Fiber Arts Council. So, it is very possible that Tsumori saw Katy's work and was personally inspired by the pieces.
You can read more about it here:

Best,
Jill :)
You are awesome. I must include you in my 'dailies', I love your posts. This collection is absolutely stunning, thank you for posting.
Thanks for the comment, by the way - made my day :)
xo
awesome comparisons!
Artistic expression could be called a reflection of the soul. It knows no boundaries that hold it to the earth or sky although it may takes its inspiration from what the eye perceives on earth and in the heavens. The beauty of Katy Widger's creations transcend the mundane.
And I do agree with Hope that New Mexico should be experienced... personally and up close. That, however, is not Katy Widger's responsibility. It belongs to us.
I'm not familiar with either person, so this was a double revelation for me. Nice work, as usual.
I want to be in your head when you make up these posts my dear! Ellie and I have been fine ;).
love, love this pairing.
Hi Jill,
A friend just sent me a link to this post on your blog, and I was surprised and pleased to see the comparisons you made.
Just to clear up some long standing mis-information floating around the web about me:
I am a native New Mexican of many generations, but have never lived in Taos. I had a "big show" there once, but I presently reside in Edgewood, south of Santa Fe and east of Albuquerque.
For future reference and copyright permission, I'm very easy to contact at katy@katywidger.com or just visit my website at www.katywidger.com.
