Pixelated Face by Pink Cactus PropsWhat do the Spring 2009 collections from Viktor & Rolf, Lucian Matis, Giles Deacon, Filippa K, and Dries Van Noten all have in common? Pixels. And it was an unexpected post by The Coveted that reminded me just how in love I am with these little blocks of color.
Pixelation gave Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren a starting point for their futuristic collection. And Giles Deacon found inspiration in none-other than the pixelated graphics of the late 80's video game, Pac Man. Van Noten restricted his patterns to graphic grids, stripes, and checkerboards to achieve an "accessible" and "pragmatic" aesthetic. And Lucian Matis found beauty in the digitized romanticism of large pixelated florals. But the true credit for this trend en masse is Basso Brooke's heavily pixelated Fall 2007 collection (although I'm sure these designers would disagree). So, I'll let you be the judge of that :)

Hahaha!!! Oh dear, the Ann-Sofie Back tops look like they have something rude pixellated off of them.....
I love these pixel looks. They're orderly and vague at the same time. I'm sure that doesn't sound like it makes any sense.

How funny that a phenomenon that annoys the hell out of us in graphic design becomes elegant when applied intentionally to textiles. And I agree with enc, there is a great dichotomy of order and disorder here.

Wow! i love pixels!!!.. and I admire your observation about Basso & brooke being the first to bring this influence - recently i was looking their past work and lots of new things in fashion seem to be inspired by them - like the Prada's Fairy collection , McQueen's most recent collection with the hyperreal graphic symmetry , also the whole tribal vibe now everywhere as B&B SS07 - those guys are very smart and rocks ( at least here in Italy!!) and opened the eyes of the fashion industry for a more adventurous way to look the world .. love your blog! :) Bacio Franci xx
I had to paint my face with these squares in an art class in college, using gauche. It was really hard to do. I love how geometric the designs are, and I also like when the colors are gradated, like in fine art. Extremely artistic and the designs can get really complicated in a good way.
