Viggo Mortensen by Richard Burbr, Winter 2008While I would like to believe that it was my mother who introduced the world to 'trash bag chic' after creating a makeshift rain coat for me in the 2nd grade, it was actually designers Marni and Gareth Pugh that brought trash bags to the runway in 2006. Alexander Herchkovitch, Luella, Moschino, and Hamish Morrow were quick to follow up with fashionable dumpster diving in 2007. Now, in 2008, it's the evolution of the garbage bag aesthetic (complete with bag-esque wrinkles and gathers) that has me convinced of one thing: Trash bag chic is here to stay, at least for the time being. Any takers?

The Diana Brinks images are amazing. This post reminds me of an old phoito I have of myself, aged 3 and dressed in a bin liner for some Halloween thing my Mum sent me on. I didn't look quite as cool as these folks do!

Yes, please. My style is generally pretty reserved, but I love this combination of texture and shine. The pants in the first group are especially appealing.
I feel slightly wary about trash bag chic. I wouldn't wear anything that is the texture of a bin liner, but there is nothing wrong with shiny black fabric like the dress Maggie Gyllenhaal is wearing. She looks amazing!
I'm surprised to say it, but I like a lot of those dresses. I prefer to think of them as made from PVC, to thinking of them as made from garbage bags, but that's MY illusion. I'm sticking to it.
