Frida Kahlo: The Unintentional Fashion Icon

The style of dress worn by Frida Kahlo was a highly constructed performance -- a political statement of pride in indigenous Mexican culture, and a camouflage for her physical ailments. The regional costume Frida adopted was of the matriarchal community of Tehuana in southern Mexico, and continues to inspire designers and photographers around the world (as beautifully illustrated by Keri Pertin.) And, as collections moving into 2009 will demonstrate, her influence hasn't lost it's charm.

Earlier this year, "Self Portrait in a Velvet Dress: The Fashion of Frida Kahlo" was published -- the first book ever to focus on one of the most memorable aspects of her persona and creative oeuvre: her wardrobe. In the book, beautifully staged photographs of Kahlo's newly restored clothing are paired with historic photos of the artist wearing them and her paintings in which the garments appear.
