The One-Night Stand Generation

A headline in the UK Daily Mail caught my eye today:

"Why So Many Educated, Middle Class Women Are Now
Proud Members of the One-Night Stand Generation"

"For a generation of young, university-educated women brought up on a diet of Madonna and Sex And The City (Samantha, the voraciously promiscuous character played by Kim Cattrall, seems to be a favorite role model), the sexual freedom she espouses is clearly something of which to be proud, not ashamed." [link]

Interestingly, there have been other studies published in recent months that shed additional light on the female one-night stand phenom:

* In the Durex Global Sex Survey, 45% of participants admitted to having at least one night stand in the past 12 months. (Question: Are they conducting these surveys in frat houses?)

* According to the 2008 Harlequin Romance Report, 62% of New York women have had a one night stand compared to 51% of American women. (Wow, when does Harlequin find time to juggle market research with their trashy novel publication schedule?)

*A study of 2,000 women in the UK, commissioned by MORE magazine, found that 60 per cent of women said they would "kiss and tell" for money if they had a one-night stand with someone famous. (I wonder if they would feel the same way if the 'famous' person was Gary Busey?)


* According to the Times UK, a new study revealed Brits are more promiscuous than Germans, Americans, Australians, French and Canadians, and that they have markedly more liberal attitudes towards one-night stands. (Really, I thought the Canadians would blow everyone out of the water, with those sub zero temperatures and long winter nights.)

* According to new research published by Anne Campbell, Professor of Psychology at Durham University, the majority of women surveyed weren't suited to one-night stands at all, no matter how much they try to persuade themselves otherwise. 58% of women, compared with only 23 per cent of men, regretted casual one-night encounters with the opposite sex. The chief emotion expressed by these women was overwhelming regret.

So, is this fem phenom behind the proliferation of one-night stand kits made specifically for the woman who wakes up in dire need of a fresh pair of panties? Or did women just get tired of gifting fruit baskets to their girlfriends, driving demand for something a little more interesting?
