To pre-pubescent girls, the unicorn is nothing short of a superhero -- just ask one. When I was a girl, She-Ra rode a badass flying unicorn, pop-artist Lisa Frank put technicolor unicorns on the map, and My Little Pony quadrupled it's appeal with a addition of Fizzy and Galaxy, two unicorns from the My Little Pony animated series. (Too bad Rainbow Brite went the Pegasus route -- such a shame...)

But the unicorn didn't always appeal to the tween girl set. Unlike the modern 'fantasy' interpretation, the traditional unicorn donned a billy-goat beard, a lion's tail, and cloven hooves. Originally depicted as a powerful, fierce, wild mountain bull with large horns, these creatures were more aligned with male prowess and unwavering determination (which would explain the Obama unicorn paintings that popped up during the elections).

But it was during medieval times that the unicorn took a feminine turn, as Marco Polo explained "they were tamable only by a virgin woman" (presumably one with pasty white skin and perky breasts.) So how it is that the unicorn is most-often associated with kitsch velvet paintings, creepy custom 70's vans, and goth neo-naturalism? Who gives a sh*t, right? Because as long as the 80's is coming back with a vengeance, I am going to welcome my childhood superhero back with open arms!
