For those of you too young to remember cassette tapes, jelly bracelets, and Blondie, there was actually a time when Nicolas Cage was semi-attractive. (No, really!) Not that I'm a senior citizen, but I did have two older brothers who rocked the Sun-In hair lightener and Swatch watches like nobody's business. The Valley Girl scene was in full force at my house, which brings me to the reason I'm writing this.
For many, the movie Valley Girl was simply a cheesy (albeit cynical) preview into the lives of sex-crazed teenage misfits living in the San Fernando Valley. But it was a truly life-altering experience for me, ushering me out of a lifetime of adolescent naivety and into pre-pubescent bliss. Case in point: Valley Girl introduced me to "sexy" chest hair (hubba-hubba), birth control pills, lacey negligees, and the underground Hollywood club scene (which I actually believed to be "underground" until my senior year of high school, at which point I learned they were actually above ground.)
If I had a time machine, that is the exact moment of my childhood I would return to (except for the part where my mother catches me watching Valley Girl with my brothers and sends me to my room.) But there aren't going to be time machines -- at least not in my lifetime -- which is why I would be better off getting dressed up in some of these 80's inspired outfits and inviting my brothers over for movie night (complete with popcorn, The Sparks "Angst In My Pants", and fake hairy chests for everyone to wear). Sorry mom, but you're not invited to this one -- like oh my gawd, gag me with a spoon, fer sure, fer sure, fer sure.

Valley Girl came out during a time the US was crawling out of recession and people started to care about how they looked albeit in new and unique ways. (Disco had died and people were trying to figure out what to do with their tight white pants and platform shoes.) This was a stepping stone to the fashionable mid to late 80s where people WANTED to look good which popular culture of the time reflects. Then came grunge...I hope current conditions get us back to people caring again.

I STILL remember the FIRST time I actually heard some girls talking that way and I almost fell over laughing...I was at Magic Mountain. (does that place even exist anymore?) I turned to see them dressed it micro mini's with the baby doll lace ankle socks and pumps!
