I've often wondered what makes spiders alluring to the opposite sex given their man-hating reputation. For instance, after a prolonged courtship, the female black widow kills her mate before laying her eggs. And during intercourse, the Australian male redback spider somersaults and twists its abdomen directly onto the fangs of the female as a sacrifice to increase his chances of paternity. This role-reversal undoubtedly draws some correlation between appearing as the weaker of the sexes while secretly wielding the power to overtake and possibly consume the dominant partner. In line with one of the tenants of S & M, it begs this question: "Do men find their own weakness and vulnerability to be the real turn on?"
